"I was slapping at him to distract him so I could go for the choke. I am not here to choose any fighter; I want to fight the best that the UFC has."

"I was injured before and I trained hard for the fight, I want to become better every fight. Brandon Vera was talking a lot during our fight and he said a lot of bad things during the fight to get me aggravated which caused our run in at the end of the first round."

Light heavyweight Brandon Vera proved once again the nose-to-fist defense is not the business. After getting thoroughly handled for much of his UFC 125 affair against Thiago Silva on Saturday, the organization posted an up close look at “The Truth’s” busted beak.

Vera was taken to the hospital immediately following his unanimous decision defeat to the Brazilian and was unable to attend the post-fight press conference. Silva, on the other hand, was sitting front and center discussing his first win since putting Keith Jardine down at UFC 102 back in August 2009.

“I train everything from wrestling to Muay Thai and the whole fight I was trying to finish the fight.,” Silva said after bumping his record to 15-2. “I let my hands go. I love the clinch and that’s the place I want to be.

“He said he was going to knock me out and I felt like he was disrespecting me.”

Not too many moons ago, Vera was considered one of the sport’s top up-and-comers. Fast forward through a bitter contract dispute and subsequent 3-6 Octagon record, including three consecutive losses, and the Filipino-American now finds himself staring the unemployment line dead in the eyes.

The Muay Thai specialist was perfect through his first eight professional MMA scraps, however currently holds a 11-6 record.

There’s a battle of big-hitting brawlers currently under consideration for UFC 117 as Thiago Silva will reportedly return to action against Tim Boetsch on Aug. 7 at the Oracle Arena in Oakland, Calif., according to Sherdog.com.

Outside of Evans and current champion Lyoto Machida, Silva is 5-0 inside the Octagon, with TKO wins over Keith Jardine, Houston Alexander and James Irvin.

Hoping to spoil his climb back to the top will be Boetsch, who hasn’t been employed inside the Zuffa cage since a disappointing unanimous decision loss to Jason Brilz at UFC 96 back in March 2009.

UFC light heavyweight Thiago Silva (14-2 MMA, 5-2 UFC) is back in the gym and wants to fight this summer.

After “serious back injury,” Thiago Silva targeting summer return, possibly at UFC 116

by MMAjunkie.com Staff

The Brazilian slugger today told MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) that he’s recovered from a serious back injury and returned to his flagship gym at American Top Team in Coconut Creek, Fla.

Silva said he had three herniated discs in his back three weeks prior to his most recent fight against Rashad Evans at UFC 108 and was nearly bedridden until the Jan. 2 main event.

Silva had the audience on the edge of its seat when he nearly knocked Evans out in the third round of the bout, but he eventually fell short on the judges’ scorecards. Afterward, he went into an intense physical therapy regimen and stayed out of the gym.

In that time, he’s learned a painful lesson: He can’t take any more fights when he’s hurt.

“When I needed the extra stamina, the extra gas, I didn’t have (it) to finish the fight,” Silva said through his translator and manager Fabiano Silva. “It’s not a regret, but it was a big thing to learn.”

In the weeks leading up to the event, which went down in history as one of the most injury-plagued fight cards in UFC history, Silva denied reports that he was fighting hurt. Privately, though, he admitted he was in bad shape.

In recovery, he worked to strengthen his hips and lower-back muscles, which had atrophied in his time off. He said the pain in the two areas made him unable to stop Evans’ takedowns during the fight.

“I had to go through a lot of pain and suffering,” Silva said of his physical therapy. “But thank god, everything works fine, and I just got cleared by the doctor last week. I’m back now.”

Starting July 3, the date of the UFC’s blockbuster summer card, UFC 116 with UFC heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar vs. interim title-holder Shane Carwin, he’s ready to fight.

“There’s a few names out there that are available because pretty much everybody is signed for fights,” Silva said. “There are a few names now, but we can’t say yet.

“We’ve already asked for two names from the UFC, so we’re waiting to see how it’s going to come out. But I’m only going to take a tough fight; no easy way. I want the top [fighters].”

One light heavyweight burning up the 205-pound ranks is Jon Jones. The up-and-comer decimated Brandon Vera eight days ago on March 21 and is poised for a top-tier opponent. UFC president Dana White said Jones is one year away from a title shot, but an opponent such as Silva—one of the few who’s currently un-booked—appears to be a good fit in the interim.

Silva, however, disagrees.

“I think [Jones] is a wonderful fighter; he’s doing a good job, putting on a good show,” Silva said. “But I think he has to prove himself more to get the right to fight me. He’s doing fine, but he has to take a few more steps. I [want to] climb fast to the title shot, so I want people with the high ranking right now.”

And Silva is prepared to wait for those fights.

“Money’s not an issue right now, so I’m ready to wait to get the fight I want so I can work back to the top,” he said. “A fight’s a fight; you don’t want to take risks.

“You want to beat the best so you can be the best.” Somewhere down the road, he wants to rematch Evans and light heavyweight champion Lyoto Machida, who defeated him by knockout this in a No. 1 contender’s bout in January 2009 at UFC 94.

“Of course I want those fights because I think I have all the tools to beat those guys,” Silva said. “Not taking anything from them. They are top level athletes, but I believe I can beat those guys.”

Now, it’s a matter of waiting to find out the name of the first opponent to welcome him back to the octagon.

MMA Sports: Tell us about your thoughts about the fight with Alexander Houston?
Thiago Silva: I thought Houston was strong and a way explosive fighter. I trained hard and did specific training to annul his game. He has a strong punch and he is a knock-out machine! I imposed my game and my base, which means, I was planning to take the fight to the ground. Watching his fights, he won them all exchanging punches. He never went down in a fight and I decided to test him. I imposed my game and won the game.

MMA Sports: How did you start to train at American Top Team?
Thiago Silva: I’ll be honest with you. I’ve reached some high training levels in my career and I kind of needed a better training structure. My old gym, where I was training in São Paulo, with Jorge Patino Macaco, was not good enough… anymore. By the way the financial part was also not great too. We started to disagree about some issues and I decided to live in the U.S. I am friends with Alex Davis and now he’s my manager.

MMA Sports: When did you meet Davis?
Thiago Silva: He is such a friend. In fact I know a friend who knew him in childhood. So he introduced us and I renegotiated my contract with UFC and he offered to train me. I confess I was curious to know the whole structure and team and I realized the training was amazing. Team was very professional and so far I am loving it. This is my new home now.

MMA Sports: How is your Chute Boxe’s leaving?
Thiago Silva: Unfortunately was not good. Macaco and I had a disagreement about money and that’s not great, ever! In my opinion I thing everybody needs to earn honest money. He as a trainer and manager and I as a fighter. But unfortunately he wanted to make more money than he was supposed to. And I started to feel bad and decided to leave. That’s the truth. He told the press I abandoned him but behind the scenes he was forcing me to sign a contract that wouldn’t be good for me.

MMA Sports: So, tell us about this new contract?
Thiago Silva: I am closed with American Top Team, with Alex Davis. I cannot say too much, but I can tell you it’s a long and interesting contract. In my point of view it was great for both parts. Everybody is happy.

MMA Sports: Tell us about your training at ATT?
Thiago Silva: I like training with everybody, but especially with Wilson Gouveia, Jorginho, Antônio Pezão, the heavy ones. They make part of my training day… training is awesome. Talking about the trainers, Wally trains our Muay Thai, who is doing a great job with us. There is André, our physical trainer, Howard, who teaches Boxing, Carmelo, who trains Wrestling and Ricardo Libório, who trains Jiu-Jitsu. There is a great structure and you see the results in really few time. You have to keep following the evolution of the sport… so I am having a great time at ATT.

MMA Sports: Talking about UFC. How is your relationship with Dana White?
Thiago Silva: I love UFC and my relationship with Dana White is wonderful. I really like him. He treats me well and I don’t have reasons to complain. I do my job and I train hard to do it well. In my opinion, who trains hard always gets in the top. I have traced my goal and I am determined to reach the top.

MMA Sports: Who do you think is the strongest fighter in your division?
Thiago Silva: I am good friends with American Top Team’s JZ Cavalcanti and I was telling him there are lots of ups and downs in the division and it’s hard to point a single fighter. I really like to watch Forrest Griffin matches. However I am training to be the best and I will fight anyone.
